The MindRight Athletes Society Initiative
Promoting Positive Mental Health
- Early Intervention
- Peer to Peer Support
Using Hockey as a Medium
Vision
Help athletes end the mental health stigma within their peer group, and assist players with seeking the necessary help, they need from the P2P Resource Team and existing community resources.
Mission
MindRight for Athletes Society focuses on helping promote wellness and positive living for young people through increasing community awareness and making use of existing mental health resources. We want to encourage young people to be open and engage in Peer to Peer conversation. We want to support, connect, and build ties with young people using hockey as a medium while creating a movement with a brand that makes mental health relatable and accessible
We endeavor to achieve our mission by:
- Engaging in educational, benevolent, charitable, recreational and other activities;
- Providing information, resources, property, facilities and assets for the use and enjoyment of its members and others in connection with such educational, benevolent, charitable, recreational and other activities;
- Promoting and facilitating wellness and positive living for young people through increasing community awareness, peer to peer support and making use of available mental health resources;
- Supporting, facilitating and promoting access to concussion education and mental health support resources generally and for young athletes in particular; and,
- Establishing, supporting, facilitating and providing funding for educational scholarships.
We will continue to reach out and add support to a system that needs to enhance, promote, and provide mental health care for all. We will encourage others to join us to support those in need as mental health does not discriminate.
“I believe we have the resources available to help youth in need and we should give them support to get the help when needed,”
– Myles Mattila
KIJHL players have access to top notch training, priceless life experiences, and worthwhile opportunities—but what about their mental health? Young athletes encounter many stresses at this stage in their sports careers; lets make sure they have the tools, the insight, and the understanding to recognize when they (or others close to them) might need extra help. When our athletes are well informed and supported in their mental health, they are well-equipped for success within the world of athletics and beyond.
Mental Health Support Program
To Enhance Mental Health And Wellness
MindRight is a mental health wellness program designed to educate players, coaches, parents, and supporters about their mental health and the health of others. We aim to provide information about local resources available, and help players make connections with the services they might need. We are proud to work within the community to help reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness.
We Aim To Provide And Promote:
- Awareness
- Community Involvement
- Mental Health Education
- Support Contacts
- Techniques
Mental Health Awareness Goal:
- Early Intervention
- Peer to Peer Support
- Using Hockey as a medium
The primary goal of P2P is to create a resource platform to help provide support and do even more for youth mental health. This initiative focuses on raising initial awareness, sourcing and coordinating an additional resource team, and helping youth access existing support associations within the community. Currently, we use hockey as one example and a common place where we have access to a large number of ‘players’ (i.e. like-minded youth) as we continually try to demonstrate that it is ‘ok’ to ask for help. We believe that, when dealing with mental health challenges, early intervention is crucial and this can be accomplished with P2P.
Our Vision
Help youth hockey players end the mental health stigma within their peer group, and assist players with seeking the necessary help they need from the P2P Resource Team and existing community resources.
Our Mission
Mindright.info focuses on helping promote wellness and positive living for young people through increasing community awareness and making use of existing mental health resources. We want to encourage young people to be open and engage in Peer to Peer conversation. We want to support, connect, and build ties with young people using hockey as a medium while creating a movement with a brand that makes mental health relatable and accessible
How we will achieve our Mission
We will have each team in the KIJHL support this initiative along with the Kelowna Chiefs to host four mental health awareness games this season that will feature P2P mental health support.
Myles Mattila and other Support advocates will use there skills to reach out to local schools and hockey teams to extend an invitation to the P2P Program. We will encourage dialogue regarding mental health, provide details on existing mental health resources and promote Peer to Peer support.
We will continue to reach out and add support to a system that needs to enhance, promote, and provide mental health care for all.
We will encourage others to join us to support those in need as mental health does not discriminate.

Mental Wellness for Athletes
Young athletes are subject to many pressures and expectations, which is why it is particularly important to provide them with adequate mental wellness support. We believe that young athletes and youth should not have to search for information and support services to receive help for any mental health issues they might experience. Our program aims to offer several layers of education and support, so our youth can know that someone is in their corner when it comes to their mental health.
The MindRight program will educate young players, and others involved, about the mental health supports and services available to them, teach them to use this information to their benefit, offer examples of useful behaviour techniques, and promote the notion of community support. Feel free to call or email us to learn more about this mental health initiative.

Overview Of Our Mental Wellness Program
Awareness
In order to help spread awareness about mental health, local support groups will be engaged to operate a themed Mental Health Information Booth at all home games. Sponsors and support partners may provide promotional items and information to the fans to be given away or won in draws at home games. We also plan to promote mental health through the media, encouraging our players to inform the community as well by engaging in volunteer work, fund-raising efforts, and other mental health promotion activities as a team and in groups.
Mental Health Education
The program will provide training and information to players regarding general health and mental health awareness, early on in the hockey season. Throughout the season we will invite guest speakers and provide education about concussions.
Support Contacts
We will provide local, provincial, and national contacts as a mental health network so that anyone can find the mental health services and support they need.
